4 Tips to Combat Age Discrimination When Job Hunting

4 Tips to Combat Age Discrimination When Job Hunting 4 Tips to Combat Age Discrimination When Job Hunting 4 Resume Tips to Combat Age Discrimination Even though age discrimination was officially banned with The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) employers can still trash resumes based on perceived age with impunity. Here are 3 resume tips to help baby boomers remain competitive in today’s job market. #1: Don’t Include Your Graduation Date The Problem: If your graduation date was sometime during the Cold War, it will tip off the hiring manager to your age immediately. The Fix: This fix is easy â€" don’t write in your graduation date. #2: Sculpt Your Professional Experience The Problem: You have to write the dates of your work experience â€" so you can’t fudge it easily like in the first tip. Obviously, if your first work experience was in 1980, you’re going to give yourself away again. So what can you do? The Fix: If you have a lot of job experience, you actually have a lot of flexibility to make your resume “look young” while still impressing the hiring manager. The key is to eliminate older work experience, and focus on the last 10-15 years â€" even if your prior experience was impressive. The hiring manager will do mental math and assume that you possibly started working 10-15 years ago, and be more inclined to interview you. But what if your older job experience is both impressive and relevant to the job you’re applying for? If you feel like it absolutely must be included on your resume, you can create a combination resume. Include highlights from your previous work experience in the Qualifications Summary part of your resume, and then only list your later work experience in reverse-chronological order under it. If you’re looking for a new job but staying within the same industry, an experienced applicant doesn’t necessarily have to include much older experiences, such as entry-level industry jobs they did after graduation. By only including the last 10 years or so of highly relevant experiences, it is difficult to determine an age, but easy to recognize the applicants value. #3: Look Youthful on Social Media The Problem: Welcome to the 21st century, where “privacy” is a joke and hiring managers are going to Google your name. How are you presenting yourself on social media. The Fix: If you have one, put up a professional looking photograph of yourself at a younger age. Don’t go too far out of bounds, but dont worry it is definitely acceptable to bend perceptions a little bit. Do this especially on Linkedin, where it will be very easy for hiring managers to match your face to your name, and your prior work experience. Facebook, Google Plus, and other social media networks are more flexible, because there is at least some plausible deniability. This logic extends to adding a photo to your resume as well. If you were thinking of including a resume picture, dont because itll be an immediate giveaway to your age. #4: Keep Yourself Up To Date The Problem: You have licenses or certificates that you earned years ago â€" and if you don’t have computer skills to include in your resume, you’ll be dating yourself. The Fix: Stay current and up-to-date on certifications. If you include a certification date from a long time ago it will be a dead giveaway as to your true age. Staying current means staying employable. Don’t forget to include knowledge of current software and web applications. If you need to brush up on your skills, or just learn how to be handy with basic applications such as PowerPoint and Excel, consider enrolling in a nighttime class. Best of luck on getting the job, and staying forever young.

7 Worst Things About Being a Paralegal

7 Worst Things About Being a Paralegal 7 Worst Things About Being a Paralegal A career as a paralegal (also known as a legal assistant) can be a wonderfully fulfilling profession. However, paralegal jobs have their disadvantages. If you are considering a ?paralegal career, the 10 career drawbacks below outline several top challenges of the paralegal profession (to explore the benefits of paralegal work, review these 8 Best Things about Being a Paralegal). 01 Lack of Career Path Darrin Klimek/Digital Vision/Getty Images Paralegals have a limited career path in most organizations. To advance beyond the senior paralegal ranks, you must transition to another role entirely such as management or litigation support. 02 High StressParalegal jobs can be extremely stressful. Multiple, short-term deadlines, rising workloads, and high-dollar stakes combine to create a pressure-filled work environment. In the words of the blog Paralegal Hell, Its not the kind of stress of meeting a deadline or the fact that your boss may have lost his brain at birth. Its the fact that all your work is: (1) urgent and (2) of vital importance. If you screw up, the world will certainly end. And thats just the contract for the copy machine in the workroom. 03 Long HoursTight deadlines, high workloads, and a dwindling workforce combine to create an environment in which long hours, overtime, and weekend work are the norm. Paralegals, who are employed in law firm environments, frequently work more than 40 hours a week, while those employed in corporate and government arenas might enjoy more relaxed schedules. While numerous organizations have emerged to help attorneys manage work/life balance issues, few such resources exist for paralegals. 04 Routine WorkLets face it, some paralegal work, especially at the entry level, is mindless, tedious and routine. Law firm economics dictate that firms bill the client at the highest possible rate to maximize profits. Therefore, more complex, challenging tasks are often pushed up the staff hierarchy, reserving the juiciest tasks for the highest-ranking staff - senior associates and partners. In small firms, paralegals wear many hats and frequently perform work that is secretarial, administrative, or clerical in nature. 05 Lack of RespectAlthough largely undeserved, a lack of respect is one of the most common complaints among practicing paralegals. Paralegals routinely deal with demanding partners, jealous associates, competitive co-workers, disrespectful opposing counsel, cranky clients and difficult vendors. While every law firms culture is different, long hours, tricky deadlines, and high stakes can create a caustic work environment and paralegals sometimes receive more than their fair share of grief. 06 Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL)A basic tenet of paralegal practice is that paralegals cannot engage in the unauthorized practice of law; all states have enacted statutes which limit the practice of law to licensed attorneys. Although each state defines UPL differently, the practice of law is generally recognized to include: (1) accepting cases from a client; (2) setting fees; (3) rendering legal advice; (4) signing legal documents; and (5) appearing in a representative capacity before a court or other adjudicatory body. Because paralegals must work under the supervision of a lawyer, paralegals roles are limited by UPL. Also, these laws make it difficult for paralegals to receive credit or recognition outside the firm for their work. For example, if the paralegal writes a winning appellate brief, he cannot sign his name to it or take credit for it. 07 Lack of ChallengeParalegals are often underutilized because their roles are minimized or misunderstood. To overcome this barrier, paralegals must proactively educate law firm and corporate leaders regarding their substantive capabilities and the ways in which they can contribute to client service and profitability.

The most important asset you have, but are afraid to use

The most important asset you have, but are afraid to use The most important asset you have, but are afraid to use We hide behind masks and facades. At work. Parties. Social engagements. Sometimes, even at home with our loved ones. Do you remember who you used to be? Before the influencers, idols and insecurity intruded into your life? Do you remember who you were? Back before life got serious and you had to set aside childish things? Back when the summers lasted forever and everyone you loved was still around, positively influencing your life? Do you remember your dreams and hopes and desires for the future? Do you remember your innocence? The real and true person you used to be, before the onslaught of social conventions forged your conformity? - - - Wisdom is truth that consoles English philosopher and intellectual Roger Scruton wrote: “ … our real selves are vastly more interesting than the pretend selves we adopt for others’ consumption.” Scruton also wrote that, “Wisdom is truth that consoles.” To that end, here’s a bit of wisdom that might console you: The power of your innocence will set you free. Your innocence, uniqueness and authenticity are what set you apart from everyone else. They’re the qualities that can move you closer to your goals and success. Sometimes, even our perceived flaws can become assets. Consider the model Lauren Hutton. She had a gap between her front teeth. Modeling agents said it distracted from her beauty. An article in the Huffington Post described how Hutton dealt with the gap in her teeth: “At first, she tried using morticians’ wax to cover the gap, cutting a line in the middle of it. Then she used a cap, which she would often swallow, laugh out, or misplace. ‘Revlon wanted me to use it all the time, and then the construction workers would yell at me in the street, ‘Hey, Lauren, why did you fill in your space? We don’t like you anymore!’ she says. ‘So I would turn and give them a great big grin and they would cheer.’ ” - - - It is our flaws that make us interesting How about you? What are you concealing? What qualities are you hiding? Why are you hiding them? The world celebrates originals, not distant knockoffs and wannabes. I believe it is our flaws that make us interesting, the backgrounds, the hardships.” -  Jane Green There’s nothing wrong with admiring the skills and styles of others. We borrow the best bits and pieces. But in scaffolding our personas, we must never abandon our true selves. People can spot the fakes. The pretenders. They snicker at their affectations. Their contrived mannerisms. People long for authenticity, however unusual or unconventional. Truman Capote was an American author best known for his book, “In Cold Blood.” It chronicles the real life murder of an entire family in Kansas. The late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman did a stunning portrayal of Capote in the movie “Capote.” It won him an Academy Award for best actor in 2006. Capote was a gay man with a memorable voice and mannerisms. No doubt, Capote was teased in life. But he was brilliant, and he crafted his public persona to great effect, appearing on major television programs like Johnny Carson and the Dick Cavett show. Watch this short video clip of Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote, explaining to a young woman how people misunderstand him. Truman Capote didn’t apologize for the way he was. In fact, he leveraged it. He was authentic, and stood out as a result. Authenticity stands out. Individuality stands out. The real you may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but then, that’s why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors of ice cream. Tastes vary. It doesn’t matter what flavor you are, but it does matter that your flavor contains quality. Embracing our uniqueness is the first step. But then we have to refine our authenticity. We have to educate ourselves, hone our skills and abilities. Truman Capote was one of a kind, but he still had to educate himself and hone his writing. Authenticity and excellence are a winning combination. - - - Stop being afraid Country music star Tim McGraw knew he wanted to sing and tell stories with his music. But some people told him he wasn’t a good enough singer. Fortunately, McGraw refined the uniqueness of his voice, and married that to his charismatic personality and presence. He later became a country music superstar. You may not believe it, but the key to your success lies in rediscovering your innocence. Embracing your authenticity. It also requires that you develop your skills and attributes around your uniqueness. If we are ever to achieve some semblance of personal actualization, we need to stop being afraid. Stop worrying about what others are thinking. Embrace your innocence and authenticity. There will always be haters and people who put you down. They’re the ones who gossip behind your back, or anonymously attack you from the safety of their laptop keyboard. Pay the haters and naysayers no attention. If you marry quality and hard work with your innocence and authenticity, you’ll stand out and move forward. You might also inspire others, who are uncertain about their own perceived limitations and shortcomings. Embrace who you are and craft a winning combination around your quirks, idiosyncrasies and true self. Show the world the real you. Hone your talents. It worked for Lauren Hutton, Truman Capote and Tim McGraw. It can work for you, too. Before you go  I’m John Weiss. I draw old school, handcrafted cartoons and write about life. Uber employees gossiped on this app for four hours a day

Uber employees gossiped on this app for four hours a day Uber employees gossiped on this app for four hours a day For Uber employees in 2017, upheaval is an everyday occurrence. After former Uber engineer Susan Fowler made allegations of sexual harassment in February, she kicked off an internal investigation that caused the company to fire    more than 20 people  and eventually forced Uber CEO Travis Kalanick to step down. On Sunday, Uber’s board voted to have  current Expedia CEO  Dara Khosrowshahi take the helm that Kalanick vacated and restore order to the company. In the midst of these crises, thousands of Uber employees were turning to an app to gossip about these comings and goings anonymously. Blind, an exclusive app to certain tech employees, allows Uber employees to dish dirt about their company anonymously. And these employees are taking advantage of this private space. TeamBlind, the creators of the app,  told Ladders that at least 4600 Uber employees are verified users on the app.Blind: Uber employees spend up to four hours on our appTeamBlind told Ladders that after Fowler posted ab out her experience at the company, the average Uber employee was spending close to four hours a day on its app. After Khosrowshahi was announced as Uber’s new CEO - promising some stability - Uber employees were spending nearly three hours a day on this app. That is an unusual time for users to spend on any app. For some perspective on how crazy these numbers are, consider that the average U.S. consumer spends up to five hours per day on their mobile devices, according to a 2017 report.  Facebook has built a social media empire and its Facebook, Instagram and Messenger platforms got 50 minutes of our attention everyday in 2016 - an impressive number that pales, however, in comparison to the number of hours Blind alleges that Uber employees are using its app.Perhaps the reason for Blind’s success with Uber employees is that it serves an unfilled need - a way to engage with your co-workers and tech colleagues without fear of reprisal.Alex Shin, TeamBlind’s Head of Operations, tol d Ladders that the anonymity and its independence are what has helped the app succeed.“Most tools for employee engagement today are just that - tools. They measure employee productivity, they measure employee engagement, or they are some feedback loop with very few layers of transparency, and no trust from the employees,” Shin said. “We wanted to create a community app that was truly anonymous and completely neutral from company interest.”We have contacted Uber to see what they think of this and we will update when we get a response.

These 15 Quick Tips Will Help You Write Subject Line for Resume Email

These 15 Quick Tips Will Help You Write Subject Line for Resume Email These 15 Quick Tips Will Help You Write Subject Line for Resume Email Not only should your resume be impeccable, you also need to send it in a proper way. Misusing your email subject line can end up as a total disaster. Following emails are predestined to be immediately deleted: Subject: Hi /  Resume / Job Search /  Dennis Fraser /  Hard Worker! /  I NEED A JOB!!!!!!!!! Now, this is how it shouldnt be done. But what are the essentials you mustnt forget when thinking about the subject line for your resume email? Read on and keep the following 15 tips in mind before clicking the “Send” button in your email account: 1. Check for instructions First of all, always check the job posting for instructions regarding submitting an application. It may or may not  contain clear instructions on subject lines you need to follow. If it does, follow it and don’t add anything else. You’ll provide additional details once the hiring managers decide they need them. 2. Standard format If the job posting doesn’t include any instructions, stick with the basics. Using a standard subject line for a standard job search email won’t do any harm: Subject: ‘Job application’ Job title, Job ID (if applicable) - Your Name Example: Job application â€" Office Manager, Job ID #1553 â€" Ian Lumberjack Always include the job title in your subject line. The hiring managers need to see at first glance what position you are applying for. Mentioning the job title will help in case there are automated filters that categorise the hiring manager’s email. The most important information to include in the email subject line are the job title and your name together with the jobs ID if it has one. Anything less will force the hiring manager spend time opening the email and looking for more information to decode it. And annoyance is the very last emotion you want to convey. 3. Priorities Briefness is the key to success. Be as succinct as possible as lengthy email subject lines may be cut off. If that happens, the most important information can be easily lost. Nowadays, more people read their emails on their smartphones than desktop computers. Mobile devices display only 25-30 characters of email subject lines. Use the first few words to get straight to the point and place the extra information such as your credentials and experience towards the end. Example:: HR Manager with 15 Years of Experience 4. Keep it professional This applies to both your subject line and your email address. Exclude any informal phrases or casual greetings like ‘Hey’ or ‘What’s Up’. Maintain professional decorum and opt for a neutral, polite language. Make sure your email address is appropriate â€" the likes of littlefart69@yahoo.com will easily make hiring managers shake their heads in disbelief over your lack of seriousness and judgment. 5. Keywords Make your subject line relevant by including keywords related to the job position you’re applying for. Hiring managers commonly use filters and folders set up to manage the constant influx of emails. Thats one of the main reasons why it’s crucial to include keywords like ‘job application’ or ‘job candidate’ in your subject line. These will make your email searchable in the tons of emails from other candidates. 6. Referrals If someone recommended you for the position, start by including their name in the subject line. It is your opportunity to grab the attention of hiring managers and make them want to know more about you. There’s already a trust factor established when an employee or someone associated with the company refers you. Don’t miss the chance and put the name right at the beginning of your subject line. Example: Referral from Jose Nachos: Pedro Tacos, candidate for senior software analyst position 7. Thank you In your follow-up correspondence after a promising interview, it’s recommended to begin your subject line with ‘Thank You’. All other details can come later. Example: Thank You - Assistant Account Executive Interview 8. Qualifications Are there any major qualifications or certifications that you feel should be mentioned? Go ahead and put them in your subject line, especially if the job position directly requires them. Example: Job application â€" Content Developer, Job Id #8875 â€" Laura Dang, CPA 9. Designations List your designations to show that youre qualified. The subject line is your unique opportunity to distinguish yourself and immediately capture recruiters attention. Include any acronyms you have that are relevant to the job position. For example, you might want to attach academic degrees BA, MBA, or PhD after your name. Example: Job application â€" Screenwriter â€" Phil Osophy, MBA 10. No soft skills Your subject line should never sound like a marketing email. Including soft skill phrases like ‘talented’ or ‘hard-working’ is a major turnoff for hiring managers that may eventually get your email dumped in the trash folder. 11. ALL CAPS Using ALL CAPS is the digital equivalent of yelling at the hiring manager. It does indeed capture someones attention, but in the worst possible way. Subject lines in ALL CAPS create feelings of anxiety and stress. Avoid them at all costs. Instead, use dashes or colons to separate your thoughts. They carry no negative connotations and will make your subject line more structured. 12. Punctuation Avoid special symbols and characters like exclamation marks, question marks, hashtags, asterisks or ampersands. Keep your subject line neat with standard formatting. 13. Proofread Email subject lines often get forgotten amidst all the proofreading that needs to be done in your resume. This is one of the worst mistakes you can do. Make sure your writing is clear and free of errors. Your subject line is your first impression and any typo or grammar mistake will spoil it. 14. Expanded view The email subject line provides you with virtually infinite amount of space. When expanded, the field will contain generous 150 characters. It’s almost like tweeting a message. No waste of redundant letters, spaces or punctuation. Prioritise what you want to say and choose your wording wisely.  Here’s a useful example of an expanded subject line: Subject: Senior Accountant Position â€" 10 Years Exp: Worked at Amazon with background in AML and Compliance 15. Preview pane Besides your subject line, bear in mind that many people with desktop applications might use the preview pane to let you  have a glimpse of the email.   Usually, there’s only room for an opening paragraph. Your first couple of sentences should attract attention without being too flamboyant or otherwise putting off the reader. Focus on the first 2-3 lines. Give a concise summary of your reason for writing, desired job position and relevant background. You can elaborate these points in detail later on once you’ve hooked the reader into reading the whole email. The subject line of your resume email? Just the start. These tips should help you craft the perfect email subject line when submitting your job application. But the subject line is just one aspect of the whole email. In order to make the best impression, your application needs to be absolutely flawless. If this is something that always gives you a hard time, adopt one of these 10 proofreading techniques. Other things to consider include how to address the letters recipient, use an appropriate sign-off, and which font and font size to opt for. For more advice, consult our ultimate resume checklist which will walk you through all the steps necessary before submitting your application. Writing hundreds of emails and getting no response? Three Life-Changing Areas of Neural Technology

Three Life-Changing Areas of Neural Technology Three Life-Changing Areas of Neural Technology Three Life-Changing Areas of Neural Technology Engineers are starting to work much more closely with neuroscientists and other researchers to develop and perfect activities that are truly brain-like, much more biological, and multidimensional. This teamwork will mean breakthroughs in at least three broad areas, which are described below. Mechanical engineers are an important part of these teams because they understand how things work and how structures push against each other in an environment with a lot of complex mechanical movement. Smarter Medical Devices The most developed area is work that results in smarter medical devices, says Bradley Greger, principal investigator at the Neural Engineering Lab at Arizona State University. From teamwork among experts in various fields is emerging thinking that neural interfaces need to integrate sensory and motor components. For decades they were talked about individually. But people are saying, We cant think about it that way, and work on simultaneous motor and sensory control automatic interfaces is underway. The result is a process that replicates how the brain works and will result in devices that will be able to read electrical and chemical signals from the nervous system and respond much more like the human body does. A synergy-based prosthetic hand, called the SoftHand Pro. Image: Jessica Hochreiter / ASU Sensory and motor are tightly interwoven at the neural level, Greger says. I cant move if I dont have good sensation. And I have to move to get good sensation. If I want to move my hand, I cant do that without sensory input as a guide. Its the neural interfaces, the physical connections to the brain, that are going to let us do that. He says one straightforward example is the control of a robotic arm for someone paralyzed. Current technology is guided by vision. The person has to look and pay careful attention to what they are doing because a sense of touch or arm position is not built into the device. The person thinks of what they want to do, but has to look and see to accomplish it. Thats not how we really move, he points out. The arm has a massively complex sensory system that we unconsciously have access to that helps control our movements without thinking about it. There now are groups, including Gregers own lab, working on neurally controlled prosthesis that incorporate sensors of the arm leading into the brain providing a sense of touch and arm position. Another project at his lab in this space involves a vision restoration prosthesis for someone who is blind. They are hooked up to a camera that connects directly into the visual processing parts of the brain. That seems like simple sensory access, Greger says. But its very complex. Your sense of vision is controlled by and intimately linked with how you move your eyes. The visual system has to know what your eyes are doing and how you move them in order for you to process that information. Another device being tested is an implant to control epileptic seizures. Its breakthrough in the sense that they are helping people right now. It looks very promising, Greger says. Finally, another potentially life-enhancing and promising technology is an implant for people with chronic pain not relieved by medications. The device delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord to mask pain signals before they reach the brain. Better Artificial Intelligence So much of the terminology being used in artificial intelligence comes from neural technologyneuronets or brainlike or cognitive, Greger says. Even so, the artificial intelligence work currently involves only one level of processing that goes on in the brain, individual groups of neurons, or cells that talk to each other through pulses of electricity. There are other interactions that happen with electrical fields that are part of the computational process, and the complicated architecture of neural circuits are activities that also need to be considered, he says. He likened the work to building a model of a Ferrari and expecting it to behave like a real Ferrari. Thats not going to happen. You are trying to interface with the brain without taking into account how the structure really functions, that its multidimensional, multi-scale and squishy, in terms of both its physical structure and function. We keep trying to put it in non-biological form. Once we start taking biological factors into account, it will give people a lot more knowledge about problem solving for intelligent control of machines, Greger says. Building Protoplasmic Circuits The third big areaneurotechnology that is truly biologicalis where it gets really crazy, Greger says. We are seeing the beginning of this with stem cells and artificial tissues. As the fields of cellular neurobiology and systems biology mature, we can start building complex cellular structures and cellular-like tissues, replications of areas of the brain for replacement or for controlling circuits. Researchers have started building very simple protoplasmic circuits and programming them to perform certain functions, leading toward autonomous cars being driven by protoplasm, a little brain instead of electrical circuit. It would be much more powerful in terms of its computational ability than a digital circuit, he says. We are decades away from seeing your Amazon delivery drone controlled by protoplasm, but its not total science fiction. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We are decades away from seeing your Amazon delivery drone controlled by protoplasm, but its not total science fiction.Prof. Bradley Greger, Arizona State University
